<p><strong>What’s considered “normal” hotel service can be surprisingly different in the United States. </strong>After spending over 100 nights in U.S. hotels last year, <strong>I’ve put together six essential tips every traveler should know to avoid unexpected surprises during business trips or vacations.</strong></p>

<p>From <strong>tipping and deposits to amenities, laundry, and breakfast</strong>, I’ll explain the real deal based on firsthand experience — so you can travel with confidence and peace of mind.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1920" height="1440" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/thumbnail_IMG_1535-4-edited.jpg" alt="Is Tipping Required at U.S. Hotels?" class="wp-image-3281" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/thumbnail_IMG_1535-4-edited.jpg 1920w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/thumbnail_IMG_1535-4-edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/thumbnail_IMG_1535-4-edited-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/thumbnail_IMG_1535-4-edited-768x576.jpg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/thumbnail_IMG_1535-4-edited-1536x1152.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></figure>

<p>In the U.S., tipping at hotels is often said to be “expected,” <strong><span class="marker-under">but in my experience, I haven’t found it necessary in most cases.</span></strong></p>

<p>The only times I’ve actually tipped were:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>For housekeeping during long-term stays</li>

<li>When using valet parking services</li>
</ul>

<p>Many hotels in the U.S. <strong>don’t offer daily housekeeping for short stays</strong>, so you might not even have a chance to tip. <strong>Budget and mid-range hotels also typically don’t have bellhops or room service, which means there are fewer situations where tipping is required.</strong></p>

<p>That said, tipping is a deeply rooted part of American culture. While I’ve never received poor service for not tipping, <strong>it’s always a nice gesture to offer a small tip when someone goes above and beyond—it shows appreciation and helps you navigate local customs with ease.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc2">What Is a Hotel Deposit in the U.S.?</span></h2>

<p>When checking into a hotel in the U.S., you’ll often be asked to provide a <strong>deposit</strong>—also known as a <strong>security hold</strong>—even if you’ve already paid for your stay online. This temporary hold on your credit card helps protect the hotel against potential issues during your stay.</p>

<p><strong>▶ Why Is a Deposit Required?</strong></p>

<p>Common reasons for a deposit include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Damage to the room or furniture</li>

<li>Missing towels or amenities</li>

<li>Smoking in a non-smoking room</li>
</ul>

<p>To cover such “just in case” scenarios, hotels will place a <strong>hold (pending charge)</strong> on your credit card. This is not an extra payment, but a temporary authorization that typically disappears a few days after checkout, assuming no issues arise.</p>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under">▶ You Still Need to Show Your Card, Even If You Prepaid</span></strong></p>

<p>Even if you fully prepaid for your stay, you’ll still be asked to present a valid credit card at check-in. But rest assured—<strong>no additional charges will be made unless there’s a problem.</strong></p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-tab-box-1 blank-box bb-tab bb-point block-box has-text-color has-border-color has-indigo-color has-indigo-border-color">
<p>In the U.S., it&#8217;s common for hotels to require a <strong>credit card for a security deposit</strong> in addition to the room rate. While you won’t actually be charged (the amount is just held temporarily), <strong>you may not be able to check in without a valid credit card</strong>—so be sure to have one ready.</p>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">What Amenities Are Actually Provided in U.S. Hotels?</span></h2>

<p>One common surprise for travelers is <strong><span class="marker-under">the lack of amenities in American hotels</span></strong> that are considered standard back home.</p>

<p><strong>▶ Why Aren’t Amenities Provided?</strong></p>

<p>In the U.S., the expectation is that guests will bring their own essentials. Especially in business hotels or motels, only the most basic items may be available.</p>

<p><strong>▶ Items Often Not Provided</strong></p>

<p>Be sure to pack the following items yourself:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><span class="marker-under-red"><strong>Slippers</strong></span></li>

<li><span class="marker-under-red"><strong>Toothbrush and toothpaste</strong></span></li>

<li><span class="marker-under-red"><strong>Pajamas</strong></span></li>

<li><span class="marker-under-red"><strong>Bottled water</strong></span></li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-tab-box-1 blank-box bb-tab bb-point block-box has-text-color has-border-color has-indigo-color has-indigo-border-color">
<p><strong>Even in Luxury Hotels, Don’t Count on It</strong></p>

<p>While some high-end hotels may occasionally provide amenities like toothbrushes or slippers, it&#8217;s best to assume they won’t. To avoid any inconvenience during your business trip or vacation, make sure to pack your own essentials before you travel.</p>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc4">Laundry in U.S. Hotels</span></h2>

<p>Many extended-stay and mid-range hotels in the U.S. offer on-site laundry facilities, but there are a few important things to keep in mind:</p>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under">▶ Most Machines Are Coin-Operated</span></strong></p>

<p>Washing and drying machines typically cost a few dollars each (e.g., $2.00 for wash, $1.50 for dry). While some machines accept credit cards, many still require coins, so it’s a good idea to keep quarters on hand. You can often ask the hotel front desk for change.</p>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under">▶ Bring Your Own Detergent</span></strong></p>

<p>Hotels rarely provide detergent. Travelers are expected to bring their own or purchase it at a nearby store. You can easily find single-use laundry detergent packs at drugstores or supermarkets across the U.S.</p>

<p><em>Need help choosing detergent or using American machines? </em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc5">What to Expect from Hotel Breakfasts in the U.S.</span></h2>

<p>In the United States, <strong>some hotels offer complimentary breakfast</strong>, while others charge extra or don’t offer it at all. Budget and mid-range business hotels are more likely to include free breakfast—but don’t expect a full meal.</p>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under">▶ Typical U.S. Hotel Breakfast Menu</span></strong></p>

<p>Breakfasts at American hotels are usually light and continental. Common items include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Bagels, toast, and muffins</li>

<li>Cereal and oatmeal</li>

<li>DIY waffle stations</li>

<li>Yogurt</li>

<li>Fresh fruit (like bananas or apples)</li>

<li>Coffee and fruit juice</li>
</ul>

<p>If you&#8217;re on a business trip and don’t have time to search for breakfast in the morning, choosing a hotel with a complimentary breakfast can make your stay much more convenient.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc6">Hotel Shuttle &amp; Parking</span></h2>

<p><strong>▶ Do U.S. Hotels Offer Airport Shuttles?</strong></p>

<p>In many parts of the U.S., public transportation isn’t as reliable or widespread as in countries like Japan. <strong>If you&#8217;re not renting a car, choosing a hotel with an airport shuttle can make your travel much easier.</strong></p>

<p>Here’s what to expect, especially at hotels near airports:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Many hotels offer <strong>free airport shuttle service</strong></li>

<li>Some shuttles <strong>don’t require reservations</strong>, while others must be requested by phone</li>

<li>Shuttles often run on <strong>limited schedules</strong>, so wait times can vary depending on your arrival time</li>
</ul>

<p>Before booking, <strong>it’s a good idea to check the hotel’s official website for shuttle availability and instructions.</strong></p>

<p><strong>▶ What About Parking Fees?</strong></p>

<p>If you’re renting a car, parking is an important consideration. At many U.S. hotels—especially in urban or tourist-heavy areas—<strong><span class="marker-under">parking is not free</span></strong>. Expect to pay <strong>$20–$40 per night</strong> in many locations.</p>

<p><strong>Things to keep in mind:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Inform the front desk at check-in that you have a car</li>

<li>You’ll likely receive a <strong>parking pass</strong> to display on your dashboard</li>

<li>Parking fees are <strong>charged separately</strong> from the room rate</li>
</ul>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under">When comparing hotels, don’t forget to factor in parking costs along with the nightly rate to get a clear picture of your total expenses.</span></strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc7">How Satisfied Are Guests with Hotels in the U.S.? An Honest Opinion</span></h2>

<p>Honestly, when it comes to hotel interiors and cleanliness, there is often a noticeable gap between hotels in the U.S. and Japan.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Bathrooms and sinks sometimes feel outdated</li>

<li>Carpets may have a noticeable smell</li>

<li>Some rooms seem not thoroughly cleaned</li>
</ul>

<p>These are my honest impressions after staying at various hotels during business trips and travels.</p>

<p>Another challenge is that hotel prices can be quite high relative to the quality. Business hotels often cost around <strong>$150 per night</strong>, and luxury hotels can range from <strong>$500 to $800 per night</strong> or more.</p>

<p>Hotel lounges also differ from Japan; while many Japanese hotel lounges offer complimentary drinks, in the U.S., alcoholic beverages are often not free, limiting the perks guests can enjoy even if they have lounge access.</p>

<p>If you’re hoping to relax in a luxury hotel, <strong><span class="marker-under">keep in mind that the price doesn’t always guarantee a high level of satisfaction in the U.S.</span></strong> <strong>Instead, it’s often smarter to save money on accommodation and spend more on sightseeing, dining, and local experiences.</strong></p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-tab-box-1 blank-box bb-tab bb-check block-box has-text-color has-border-color has-indigo-color has-indigo-border-color">
<p><strong>Unfortunately, hotel satisfaction in the U.S. often falls short of expectations. If you want to truly enjoy your hotel stay, booking a luxury hotel in Japan is highly recommended.</strong></p>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc8">Summary</span></h2>

<p>Using hotels in the U.S. comes with many differences compared to other countries, so it’s important to check and prepare in advance. Understanding tipping customs, what amenities are provided, and the typical breakfast options can greatly reduce stress during your stay.</p>

<p>I hope this article helps those traveling to the U.S. for business or leisure to have a more comfortable and enjoyable hotel experience.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc1">What Is the 4th of July (Independence Day)?</span></h2>

<p>The 4th of July, or Independence Day, marks the anniversary of the adoption of <strong>the Declaration of Independence </strong>on July 4, 1776. At that time, the American colonies were under British rule, facing heavy taxation and limited political freedom. Rising calls for liberty eventually led 13 colonies to declare independence from Britain on this historic day.</p>

<p>Today, the 4th of July is one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States. The entire country embraces a festive spirit, with fireworks, parades, and local events taking place nationwide. <strong>In Washington, D.C., the capital city, massive crowds gather on the National Mall to enjoy spectacular fireworks and free concerts</strong> — a signature experience. Other cities and towns also host their own fireworks shows and community festivals, especially during the holiday weekend.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc2">Events &amp; Activities on the 4th of July in DC</span></h2>

<p>Here’s a detailed look at the major events and activities that took place in Washington, D.C. for Independence Day 2025. From patriotic parades to spectacular fireworks, the nation’s capital offered a full day of memorable celebrations.</p>

<p>We skipped the events and concerts and focused solely on enjoying the fireworks. Here, I’ll share a detailed account of the fireworks display on that day!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">Fireworks</span></h2>

<p>The fireworks are launched every year after sunset. In 2025, <strong>the display lasted about 18 minutes, from 9:09 PM to 9:27 PM.</strong></p>

<p>The fireworks were set off from <strong>both sides of the Reflecting Pool, located between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="794" height="501" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/reflecting-pool.png" alt="リンカーン記念堂リフレクティングプール" class="wp-image-355" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/reflecting-pool.png 794w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/reflecting-pool-300x189.png 300w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/reflecting-pool-768x485.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc4">Fireworks Viewing Spot</span></h3>

<p>Although we were a bit concerned about the crowds when leaving, we decided, “Since we’re here, let’s watch the fireworks on the National Mall!” We chose a spot <strong>roughly halfway between the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building (marked ★ on the map below).</strong></p>

<p>From there, we enjoyed a truly iconic Washington, D.C. view, with the fireworks launching just behind the Washington Monument — an unforgettable experience!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="417" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-1024x417.jpg" alt="ナショナルモール" class="wp-image-298" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-1024x417.jpg 1024w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-300x122.jpg 300w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-768x313.jpg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-1536x625.jpg 1536w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2.jpg 1907w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc5">Fireworks Experience Report</span></h3>

<p>Around 5:30 PM, we arrived at <strong>Smithsonian Station</strong> in Washington, D.C. Nearby, <strong>we picked up sandwiches to go from Potbelly</strong> and reached the National Mall around 6:30 PM.</p>

<p>We spread out a picnic blanket at the spot marked ★ on the map and relaxed while waiting for the fireworks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="417" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-1024x417.jpg" alt="ナショナルモール" class="wp-image-298" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-1024x417.jpg 1024w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-300x122.jpg 300w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-768x313.jpg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2-1536x625.jpg 1536w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/fireworks_map-2.jpg 1907w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Enjoying a leisurely<strong> picnic </strong>as the sun set, the weather was perfect that evening, making it an ideal setting for the celebration.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6651-1024x768.jpeg" alt="ポットベリー" class="wp-image-305" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6651-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6651-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6651-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6651.jpeg 1477w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Around 7:30 PM, more and more people started to arrive! <strong>By 8:00 PM, the vast grassy area was nearly packed with spectators.</strong> If you want to enjoy the fireworks comfortably, it’s best to secure your spot early.</p>

<p>Before the fireworks began, families and friends were playing card games, snacking, and spending time together in their own ways. The sunset was stunning and truly breathtaking!</p>

<p>By 8:30 PM, the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc6">Getting to Washington, D.C.</span></h2>

<p>Many people visit Washington, D.C. for the Independence Day events. On the day, road closures, heavy parking congestion, and difficulty catching Uber rides are expected, so <strong>using public transportation or bike-sharing services is highly recommended.</strong></p>

<p>We took the Metro from the suburbs into the city. One great advantage is that <strong><span class="marker-under">all Metro lines are free to ride from 5:00 PM until the last train on the 4th of July</span></strong>, allowing for smooth and cost-effective access (normally, fares apply, so be sure to check the times).</p>

<p>Since <strong>returning home can be very crowded</strong>, it’s wise to allow plenty of extra time or consider hanging out nearby to avoid the rush.</p>

<p>Also, even if bus routes appear to be running on Google Maps, <strong>some services may be suspended on the day.</strong> It’s best to frequently check official sources and local signage for the latest updates during the event.</p>

<p>We actually tried to board the Metro at Smithsonian Station but gave up after seeing the long line stretching outside the entrance.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">Is the D.C. Metro Safe?</span></h3>

<p>When using public transportation abroad, one of the biggest concerns is safety. Even if it’s convenient, you might hesitate to use it if you’re worried about security.</p>

<p>In my experience, <span class="marker-under"><strong>the D.C. Metro is <em>relatively safe</em> compared to many other big cities in the U.S.</strong></span></p>

<p>The trains are generally clean, and you’ll often see families and commuters on board, so it feels quite similar to trains in Japan—making it a comfortable option for most travelers.</p>

<p>I’ve taken the Metro many times, even late at night, and I’ve never felt unsafe.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc4">DC Metro Ticket Options | SmartTrip Card</span></h2>

<p>In Washington, D.C., you won’t find paper train tickets. Instead, most people use a <strong>rechargeable IC card called a <span class="marker-under">SmarTrip</span></strong> or a <strong>mobile app</strong> to pass through the gates.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc5">What is a SmartTrip Card?</span></h3>

<p>A <strong>SmarTrip card</strong> is a rechargeable transportation card that can be used on both the <strong>Metrorail and Metrobus systems</strong> in the Washington, D.C. area.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><span class="marker-under">Buy at select airport kiosks or shops</span></strong></h4>

<p>Physical SmarTrip cards are also available at places like <strong>Reagan National Airport</strong> and some convenience stores around the city.</p>

<p>Washington D.C.’s <strong>Metrorail</strong> doesn’t have a flat fare. Instead, your fare depends on <strong>two main factors</strong>:</p>

<li><span class="marker-under"><strong>Distance traveled</strong> </span></li>

<li><strong><span class="marker-under">Time of day</span></strong></li>

<p>It might sound complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s simple!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc8">Distance-Based Fare</span></h3>

<p>The farther you travel, the more you pay.</p>

<p>You <strong>tap in</strong> when you enter the station and <strong>tap out</strong> when you exit.<br>The system calculates the exact fare automatically.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="481" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3953.jpg" alt="ワシントンDC駅券売機" class="wp-image-190" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3953.jpg 640w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3953-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p>Buying a Metro ticket or getting a <strong>SmarTrip card</strong> for the first time might feel unfamiliar, but don&#8217;t worry — the process is simple, even for beginners. </p>

<p>Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the ticket machines at Metro stations.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc13">Step 1: Choose the Type of Ticket</span></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="481" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3948.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-193" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3948.jpg 640w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3948-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p>At the top of the ticket machine, you’ll see a <strong>touchscreen or button panel</strong>.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>To purchase a new <strong>SmarTrip card</strong>, press the <strong>“A” button</strong>.</li>
</ul>

<p>Next, you’ll be asked to choose the <strong>initial amount to load onto the card</strong>.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Use the <strong>$-marked arrow buttons</strong> to adjust the amount.</li>
</ul>

<p>💡 <strong>Note:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">

<li>Minimum balance required: <strong>$2</strong><br><span class="marker-under"><strong>➡️ You’ll need at least $4 to get started.</strong></span></li>
</ul>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc14">Step 2: Make a Payment | Card or Cash</span></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="481" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3951.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-195" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3951.jpg 640w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3951-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p>You can pay using:</p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-blank-box-1 blank-box block-box has-text-color has-border-color has-black-color has-lt-blue-border-color">
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Credit or debit card</strong> (insert into the reader on the right side of the machine)</li>

<li><strong>Cash</strong></li>
</ul>
</div>

<p>Both options are available at most stations.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc15">Step 3: Collect Your Card</span></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="481" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3950.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-196" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3950.jpg 640w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3950-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p>Once the payment is complete, your <strong>SmarTrip card</strong> (or paper farecard, if applicable) will come out from the <strong>slot on the right side</strong> of the machine.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc16">How to Recharge (Add Value to) Your SmarTrip Card</span></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="481" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3949-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-197" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3949-1.jpg 640w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_IMG_3949-1-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p>After your first ride, you’ll probably need to reload your card. Here&#8217;s how:</p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-blank-box-1 blank-box block-box has-text-color has-border-color has-black-color has-lt-blue-border-color">
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Go to the <strong>same ticket machine</strong>.</li>

<li>Tap your <strong>SmarTrip card</strong> on the card reader area — it&#8217;s usually located in the center of the machine.</li>

<li>The screen will display the <strong>“Add Value”</strong> menu.</li>

<li>Select your desired amount.</li>

<li>Pay with cash or credit card.</li>
</ul>
</div>

<p>And that’s it — your card is ready to use again!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc17">Tips to Keep in Mind When Riding the Metro</span></h2>

<p>Here are a couple of important things to be aware of when using the Metro in Washington, D.C. — some of these might surprise you if you’re used to trains in Japan or other countries!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc18">No Eating or Drinking on the Train</span></h3>

<p>Like many public transit systems in the U.S., <strong>eating and drinking are not allowed</strong> on Metro trains. </p>

<p>Even sipping water is technically against the rules, so be sure to <strong>finish your drinks before boarding</strong>.</p>

<p>You may notice signs inside the trains reminding riders of this policy, and in some cases, violators may be fined.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc19">The Ride Can Be a Bit Bumpy</span></h3>

<p>Compared to trains in Japan, <strong>D.C. Metro trains tend to shake more</strong>, especially when turning or braking.</p>

<p>If you’re prone to motion sickness, here are a few tips:</p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-blank-box-1 blank-box block-box has-text-color has-border-color has-black-color has-lt-blue-border-color">
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Try to <strong>sit facing forward</strong></li>

<li>Choose a <strong>seat near the front or middle</strong> of the train</li>

<li>Avoid looking at your phone during the ride</li>
</ul>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-balloon-ex-box-1 speech-wrap sb-id-12 sbs-stn sbp-l sbis-cb cf block-box not-nested-style cocoon-block-balloon" style="--cocoon-custom-border-color:#aac2d2"><div class="speech-person"><figure class="speech-icon"><img decoding="async" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_vi128163762307105203353-1.png" alt="" class="speech-icon-image"/></figure><div class="speech-name"></div></div><div class="speech-balloon has-border-color has-lt-blue-border-color">
<p>I get motion sickness easily, so after about an hour on the train, I start to feel a bit off&#8230;</p>
</div></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc20">Benefits of Using the Metro in Washington, D.C.</span></h2>

<p>While there are some things to watch out for when riding the Metro, there are also plenty of advantages to using the train in D.C.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc21">Driving into central DC can be challenging</span></h3>

<p><strong>There are many traffic restrictions and one-way streets in downtown DC</strong>, which often makes it time-consuming to reach your destination by car. </p>

<p>The roads are also relatively narrow—more like those in Japan—and with lots of traffic lights and pedestrians,<strong><span class="marker-under"> driving in the city can be surprisingly stressful.</span></strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc22">Parking in downtown DC is expensive</span></h3>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under">Parking fees tend to be high</span></strong>—for example, parking for 8 hours can cost around $25 at the cheapest.</p>

<p>On the other hand, taking the Metro for two people on weekends costs about $10 round trip, making it a much better value.</p>

<p>Additionally, parking troubles and incorrect charges are common in the U.S., so using the Metro is a safer choice in that regard as well.</p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-balloon-ex-box-1 speech-wrap sb-id-12 sbs-stn sbp-l sbis-cb cf block-box not-nested-style cocoon-block-balloon" style="--cocoon-custom-border-color:#aac2d2"><div class="speech-person"><figure class="speech-icon"><img decoding="async" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/thumbnail_vi128163762307105203353-1.png" alt="" class="speech-icon-image"/></figure><div class="speech-name"></div></div><div class="speech-balloon has-border-color has-lt-blue-border-color">
<p>The travel time by car and Metro is often similar, and considering <strong>the hassle of finding parking, parking fees, and driving stress</strong>, choosing to take the train is a very reasonable option.</p>

<p><strong>When visiting the White House, McPherson Square Station is a convenient access point.</strong> </p>

<p>While it is possible to walk from the U.S. Capitol to the White House, <strong>the distance is quite long, so taking the metro is definitely worth considering.</strong></p>

<p>If you want to explore tourist spots efficiently, <strong>using the metro to get around part of the way is a smart choice.</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc26">Washington Dulles International Airport Station | Silver Line</span></h3>

<p><strong>Dulles International Airport (IAD) is served by the Metro Silver Line.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Although it takes about an hour to reach downtown DC from the airport, the convenience of a direct, no-transfer ride is a big advantage.</strong></p>

<p>In the U.S., the image is often that airports are only accessible by car or shuttle bus, but the ease of taking public transit straight to the city center is especially helpful for travelers.</p>

<p><strong>Many travelers using domestic flights often use Reagan National Airport (DCA). </strong></p>

<p><strong>This airport also has a Metro station directly connected</strong>, allowing for easy and smooth access to downtown DC by train.</p>

<p>Compared to Dulles Airport, Reagan is much closer to the city, with a <strong>travel time of about 20 minutes.</strong> </p>

<p>This makes it very convenient for both sightseeing and business, especially for first-time visitors.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc28">Summary | Washington D.C. Metro is Convenient!</span></h2>

<p>In a country known for its car culture, Washington DC stands out with its well-developed Metro system. </p>

<p>The trains are clean and comfortable, making it a safe and convenient option—even for Japanese visitors—unlike the subway systems in cities like New York.</p>

<p>I hope this article helps those planning to visit Washington DC navigate the Metro with ease and enjoy their time in the city.</p>

<p>Since moving to Washington, D.C., I’d always wanted to see Shohei Ohtani play live — and finally, I made my Major League Baseball debut at <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/nationals/ballpark">Nationals Park</a>!</p>

<p>I attended the game on April 7, 2025, when the Washington Nationals faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers.</p>

<p>With the open-air stadium, the Washington sky overhead, and a cold beer in hand, it was a truly American baseball experience. To help first-timers enjoy the game as much as I did, I’ll share everything from how to get there and buy tickets to the stadium atmosphere and food — all based on my own visit!</p>

<p><strong>▶Basic Information about the Stadium</strong></p>

<p>Nationals Park is the home stadium of the <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/nationals">Washington Nationals</a>, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Washington, D.C. Opened in 2008, it is a relatively new ballpark known for its clean, modern, and open design.</p>

<p><strong>In short: Taking the train is the best way to get there!</strong></p>
</div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">If You’re Driving</span></h3>

<p>If you plan to drive to Nationals Park, <strong>it’s safest to reserve a parking spot along with your game ticket.</strong> There are several parking garages around the stadium, with <strong>prices and distances varying by location</strong>.</p>

<p>The closest is Garage C, right next to the stadium, costing about $53, while the farthest, Garage W, is around $25. (Prices may change depending on the game day.)</p>

<p>Some of the farther lots are about a <strong>15-minute walk from the stadium.</strong> Also, keep in mind that <strong>after the game, parking lots can get extremely crowded</strong>—I&#8217;ve even heard of people being stuck waiting over an hour to exit.</p>

<p>I considered looking for cheaper parking on my own, but <strong>reviews on Google Maps for unofficial lots near the stadium were mostly negative, with comments about overcharging and safety concerns.</strong> So, even if it costs a bit more, <strong>I recommend sticking with the official parking garages</strong> for peace of mind.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc4">Getting There by Train</span></h3>

<p>The closest station to Nationals Park is the<strong> Navy Yard–Ballpark station on the Metro’s Green Line</strong>. <strong>From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the stadium.</strong></p>

<p>The route is easy to follow, and even first-timers shouldn’t have any trouble finding their way. When you exit the station, you’ll already see many fans in their team jerseys, <strong>which adds to the exciting game-day atmosphere.</strong></p>

<p><strong>We chose to take the train to avoid the heavy traffic and crowded parking lots around the stadium</strong>. While the trains were a bit crowded before and after the game, it was nothing that a Japanese commuter used to Tokyo’s rush hour would find difficult.</p>

<p>Because the station gets busy around game time, <strong><span class="marker-under">we recommend purchasing and charging a SmartTrip card in advance.</span></strong> For more information on how to use public transit around Washington, D.C., please see the article below.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc5">How to Buy MLB Tickets</span></h2>

<p>We purchased our tickets through the <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/nationals/tickets/single-game-tickets"><strong>official MLB website</strong>.</a> You can select your desired game under “Single Game Tickets” and choose your seats using a <strong>3D seating map</strong> that lets you preview the view from each section.</p>

<p>After payment, you’ll receive <strong>mobile tickets</strong> via email or through the MLB app, so there’s no need to print anything. The process is very straightforward, making it easy even for first-time buyers!</p>

<p>We chose seats <strong>right above the dugout</strong>, directly behind the players’ bench. Each seat cost around <strong>$200</strong>, which was a bit pricey—but seats just a few rows back were about <strong>$50 cheaper</strong>, and we debated for a while.</p>

<p>In the end, we decided to splurge because this was a <strong>rare opportunity to see Shohei Ohtani play live</strong>—something we didn’t want to miss!</p>

<p>While it&#8217;s true that ticket prices can sometimes drop closer to game day or on resale platforms like <strong>SeatGeek</strong> or <strong>StubHub</strong>, for <strong>first-time visitors</strong>, we highly recommend purchasing <strong>directly from the official site</strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc6">Ballpark Food &amp; Must-Visit Spots</span></h2>

<p>Once you arrive at Nationals Park, it’s not just about watching the game—there’s so much more to enjoy! The stadium is full of classic American eats and fun spots that make the experience even more memorable.</p>

<p>In this section, I’ll share some of the <strong>food I actually tried</strong> and a few <strong>places around the park that I personally recommend checking out</strong>. Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve been before, these are must-visit spots to enhance your ballpark experience!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc7">🌭Food</span></h3>

<p>When it comes to classic ballpark eats at Nationals Park, you just can’t go wrong with a <strong>hot dog</strong>—it’s a must-try!</p>

<p>Before our visit, I saw tons of people online saying “Start with a hot dog!” so of course, we had to give it a try.</p>

<p>We headed to a popular spot called <strong>“<a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.hautedogsandfries.com/washington-dc">Haute DOGS &amp; Fries</a>”</strong> located near <strong>Section 105</strong>. I ordered a classic-style hot dog, and it did not disappoint—<strong>crispy sausage, soft bun, and the aroma of mustard made it absolutely irresistible!</strong></p>

<p>We also picked up some popcorn from one of the concession stands! It came in a paper box decorated with a baseball design, and the popcorn was served directly in it—no bag inside. It felt so American in the best way possible (haha)!</p>

<p>Nationals fans are affectionately called the “<strong>Nats</strong>,” and maybe because of that, I noticed something fun—vendors were walking around the stands selling <em>nuts</em> (peanuts)!</p>

<p>What really stood out was how, when someone sitting far away bought a bag, the vendor would <em>toss</em> the peanuts to them! It was such a classic, all-American moment that really stuck with me.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc8">⚾Team Store</span></h3>

<p>The team stores inside Nationals Park are packed with all kinds of Nats merchandise—from classic T-shirts, caps, and keychains to <strong>limited-time seasonal goods and special player collaboration items.</strong></p>

<p>If you&#8217;re a first-time visitor, you&#8217;ll definitely be tempted to take home at least one souvenir. We ended up buying a cap and a knit hat as keepsakes!</p>

<p>By the way, <strong>there are several team stores inside the stadium</strong>, and each one carries slightly different items. We made our purchase at the first shop we saw, but later stumbled upon a much bigger store with a wider selection… and honestly, we kind of regretted not waiting. So if you can, <strong>check out a few stores before deciding</strong>—it’s worth the extra steps!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc9">My Impressions of the Game &amp; the Atmosphere</span></h2>

<p>Watching a game at Nationals Park was a totally new experience for me—it felt quite different from watching baseball in Japan, and in a good way!</p>

<p>What surprised me the most was <strong>how fast-paced the game was. </strong>With the pitch clock now in place in the MLB, everything moved along quickly and smoothly, which kept things exciting.</p>

<p>Another thing that stood out was the atmosphere. <strong>Even the security staff seemed like fans</strong>—cheering when runs were scored and casually chatting with people nearby. That relaxed, friendly vibe felt very American.</p>

<p>And of course, seeing Shohei Ohtani up close was unforgettable! He was just one hit away from hitting for the cycle, and during his last at-bat, the whole stadium was buzzing with excitement—no matter which team people were cheering for. It was such a special moment to witness in person!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc10">Tips for Enjoying the Game &amp; What to Bring</span></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc11">Entry Time</span></h3>

<p>At Nationals Park, the gates typically open about <strong>75 to 80 minutes before the first pitch</strong>. Unlike many ballparks in Japan where you can enter much earlier, entry here is more limited—so it’s something to keep in mind when planning your arrival.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, you <strong>won’t get to see much of the teams’ pre-game practice</strong>, unlike in Japanese stadiums. Most warm-ups are either already finished or happen out of sight before gates open, so it’s best not to expect a full batting practice viewing.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><div class="scrollable-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>First Pitch</th><th>Gate Open</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>11:05am</td><td>09:45am　（80min before）</td></tr><tr><td>12:05pm</td><td>10:45am　（80min before）</td></tr><tr><td>01:05pm</td><td>11:45am　（80min before）</td></tr><tr><td>01:35pm</td><td>12:15pm　（80min before）</td></tr><tr><td>03:05pm</td><td>01:45pm　（80min before）</td></tr><tr><td>04:05pm</td><td>02:45pm　（80min before）</td></tr><tr><td>06:45pm</td><td>05:30pm　（75min before）</td></tr></tbody></table></div></figure>

<p>Official website：<a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/nationals/ballpark/information/gate-opening-times">https://www.mlb.com/nationals/ballpark/information/gate-opening-times</a></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc12">What You Can Bring</span></h3>

<p>At Nationals Park and many other stadiums in the U.S., <strong>there are strict rules about what bags and items you can bring inside.</strong> Unlike in Japan, where you might casually carry a bag into the stadium, here you could be stopped at the entrance if your bag doesn’t meet the rules.</p>

<p><strong>Especially if it’s your first time visiting, we strongly recommend checking the official stadium guidelines</strong> beforehand to avoid any trouble at the gate!\</p>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under"><span class="marker-under-blue"><span class="marker-under-red">▶What You Can Bring</span></span></span></strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Clear Bag</strong><br>I used to think clear bags were just a fashion trend because I saw many people carrying them around town. But this time I learned they’re actually required for security reasons (haha).</li>

<li><strong>Unopened bottled drinks (one per person)</strong><br>You can bring one unopened, store-bought bottled drink like water, up to 20oz (about 600ml).</li>
</ul>

<p><strong><span class="marker-under-red"><span class="marker-under-blue">▶What You Cannot Bring</span></span></strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Backpacks or tote bags that are not clear</strong></li>

<li><strong>Alcohol or cans</strong></li>

<li><strong>Food</strong></li>
</ul>

<p>Please note that rules can change, so always check the <a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.mlb.com/nationals/ballpark/information/guest-conduct-policy">official stadium website</a> for the latest information before your visit.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc13">Summary</span></h2>

<p>I was surprised to see so many Japanese people around the Washington DC area, which is not very common. It really showed me how popular Shohei Ohtani is.</p>

<p>I hope this article will be helpful for those planning to watch Major League Baseball games in the US.</p>

<p>Last weekend, the weather was beautiful, so we headed out to <strong><a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.stayarlington.com/directory/gravelly-point/">Gravelly Point Park</a></strong>, a unique park where you can watch airplanes soar overhead at incredibly close range.</p>

<p>Located right next to <strong>Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (commonly known as Reagan Airport)</strong>, this park sits just outside of <strong>Washington, DC</strong> — only about a 15-minute drive from the city center.</p>

<p>With the <strong>Potomac River</strong> flowing nearby and a relaxed, open atmosphere, it&#8217;s a surreal experience to sit in a peaceful park while watching planes from all over the world take off and land right above you.</p>

<p>Gravelly Point is a free park in Arlington, Virginia, United States. It is located north of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, along the George Washington Parkway, and across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.</p>

<p>Gravelly Point Park sits directly along the extended runway of Reagan National Airport, and planes pass by at an incredibly close distance—just 100 to 200 feet above your head. With few obstructions around, it’s also a great spot for photography!</p>

<p>Right next to the park runs the <strong>Mount Vernon Trail</strong>, a scenic path that follows the river. When I visited on the weekend, the trail was filled with cyclists enjoying the day.<br>Surprisingly, the trail stretches all the way—about <strong>18 miles (29 km)</strong>—to <strong>George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate</strong>!</p>

<p>I only walked a short section of it, but with a bike, it would be an amazing way to explore the area, taking in views of the Potomac River while discovering bits of local history along the way.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">What It Was Like That Day</span></h2>

<p><strong>We saw the planes this close!</strong> You can actually see every detail of the plane — even the parts underneath and the wheels — with your own eyes! The planes look absolutely stunning against the bright blue sky.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1125" height="843" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_6600-2-edited.jpeg" alt="Best Park to Watch Airplanes in DC/Virginia – Family-Friendly Spot" class="wp-image-3285" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_6600-2-edited.jpeg 1125w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_6600-2-edited-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_6600-2-edited-1024x767.jpeg 1024w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_6600-2-edited-768x575.jpeg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1125px) 100vw, 1125px" /></figure>

<p>The trail you see in this photo is the Mount Vernon Trail I mentioned earlier.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="575" height="1024" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6576-3-575x1024.jpeg" alt="Best Park to Watch Airplanes in DC/Virginia – Family-Friendly Spot" class="wp-image-3284" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6576-3-575x1024.jpeg 575w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6576-3-169x300.jpeg 169w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6576-3-768x1367.jpeg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6576-3-863x1536.jpeg 863w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6576-3.jpeg 1106w" sizes="(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Next up — a takeoff!</strong> The runway stretches out right in front of you, making this one of the best plane-spotting spots around!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="577" height="1024" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6599-4-577x1024.jpeg" alt="Best Park to Watch Airplanes in DC/Virginia – Family-Friendly Spot" class="wp-image-3290" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6599-4-577x1024.jpeg 577w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6599-4-169x300.jpeg 169w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6599-4-768x1362.jpeg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6599-4-866x1536.jpeg 866w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6599-4.jpeg 1125w" sizes="(max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px" /></figure>

<p><strong>In the bottom right corner of this photo, you can see the Washington Monument.</strong> It’s not in the frame, but just a bit further to the right, we could also spot the U.S. Capitol building in the distance.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="576" height="1024" src="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6601-2-576x1024.jpeg" alt="Best Park to Watch Airplanes in DC/Virginia – Family-Friendly Spot" class="wp-image-3288" srcset="https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6601-2-576x1024.jpeg 576w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6601-2-169x300.jpeg 169w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6601-2-768x1365.jpeg 768w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6601-2-864x1536.jpeg 864w, https://ann-usalife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_6601-2.jpeg 1125w" sizes="(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure>

<p>I was using a free flight-tracking app called <strong><a rel="noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.flightradar24.com/51.47,0.46/6">Flightradar24</a></strong> to check where each plane was coming from while watching them fly overhead — it was so much fun!</p>

<p>There are benches in the park, but many people were also having picnics with picnic blankets or even setting up small tents.<br>That day, though, the temperature was over 95°F (35°C) — a seriously hot summer day! If you visit in the summer, be sure to come prepared for the sun.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc4">To Wrap Up</span></h2>

<p>The first time I visited, I was so amazed by the power and closeness of the planes that I couldn’t help but let out a loud “Wow!” When a jet roars right over your head — just barely clearing it — the experience is truly breathtaking.</p>

<p>Whether you&#8217;re a plane enthusiast, visiting with friends, a couple, or even with little kids, this spot is sure to impress.</p>

<p>I hope this post helps anyone planning a trip to the Washington, D.C. area — or those who live nearby and are looking for a fun weekend outing!</p>
